FrameGrabber 4

FrameGrabber 4

Video capture

The FrameGrabber 4 ("FG4") is a new arrival in the FrameGrabbers family. It comes with technology to capture multiple video streams from all VW Group LVDS buses.

Product Description

The new  FrameGrabber 4 (abbrv. "FG4") grabber family brings new capabilities for grabbing and video stream processing. FrameGrabber 4 PCIe Card forms the heart of the FrameGrabber 4 ecosystem. It is a powerful versatile solution for (not only) video applications. As a PCIe 2.0 x4 modular input/output card with 12Gbit data throughput, it has power for video stream grabbing of two video inputs together with generating two video outputs in up to huge 4K@60 resolution! FrameGrabber 4 PCIe Card is modular. Users can easily swap exchangeable interface modules while a PCIe card is installed in a PCIe slot. The interface module allows grabbing video streams from and injecting video streams to various LVDS buses like is common FPD Link3 interface, GMSL2/3 interface, or various interfaces for kombi instruments.

A user of FrameGrabber 4 has freedom in usage. The FG4 PCiIe cards can be used stand-alone as a performance solution, installed directly to the PCIe slot in the PC. Video streams can be accessed via Direct Show (Windows) or Video4Linux (Linux) subsystems.
A single card can be installed into "FrameGrabber 4 SingleBox" and connected to a PC via a Thunderbolt 3 port in case of the absence of a PCIe slot (usage with laptops).

Multiple cards can be installed into "FrameGrabber 4 MultiBox" and remotely accessed via Ethernet. The FrameGrabber4 MultiBox presents a complex and user-friendly solution, that allows to insertion of multiple PCI Express cards. It's operation is thus independent of the computer and its interface and is used similarly to the favorite MGB FrameGrabber.

DQ Viewer tool is used for configuring the FG4 ecosystem. It is used also as a simple preview tool a video/screenshot recorder from video inputs and a stream injector to video outputs.

Overall, the FG4 presents a powerful solution that allows multiple video streams to be processed simultaneously. The core of the solution presents a PCIe card with interchangeable LVDS modules. FG4 PCIe cards can be inserted into the appropriate PCIe slot.

For the use cases where is not possible to insert PCI express cards directly (f.ex. grabbing in a car with a laptop) the "FrameGrabber 4 Single Box“ is developed. The FrameGrabber 4 Single Box allows to insertion of one PCI Express card that is connected via. Thunderbolt3 interface with a computer.

A more comprehensive standalone solution with easy operation is the FrameGrabber 4 MultiBox, which allows multiple PCIe cards to be inserted and remotely accessed via Ethernet.

Modules & Accesories

FPDLink3 interface module
  • FPD Link 3 module is intended for capture from a FPD Link 3 LVDS bus.
  • The FPD Link 3 LVDS bus is currently used in the majority of VW Infotainments group equipments with a separated central unit (ZR) and LCD display.
  • For interconnections, LVDS cables for FPD Link 2/3 are used.
GMSL 2/3 interface module
  • The GMSL 2/3 module is intended for capture from a new GMSL 3 LVDS bus.
  • The module is directly connected on the LVDS bus between the infotainment main unit (ZR) and the infotainment LCD display.
  • For interconnections, LVDS cables for GMSL 2/3 are used (H-MTD cables).
