SUSAN
SimulatorsSimulation unit that makes vehicle functions simulations in secured automotive network simple.
Simulation Unit for Security in Automotive Networks (SUSAN) is unique easy to setup and use solution providing simulations of vehicle functions of Electronic Control Units (ECU). SUSAN is integrated with multiple applications and serves as an enabler for development and testing of functionalities in various simulation environments. It offers simulation scenarios from basic vehicle functionalities up to advanced features related to security like Immobilizer master/slave, Secured On-board Communication, Component protection. Thanks to its comprehensive scope and ease of use solution is SUSAN widely applied in all areas of vehicle functions development.
The original goal of SUSAN box was to provide a system that simulates parts of the anti-theft protection of the modular vehicle kit at E3 1.2 / PPE platform. As the requirements for the system developed, the scope of the functionalities grew accordingly. Currently SUSAN adopts functionality for PPE/PPC and continually expand supported simulations also for MEB and MQBevo platforms.
The SUSAN presents a live product that is continuously improved based on customer requests. Our team currently works on the extension of the SUSAN functionality to provide one universal simulation environment for all platform within VW Group.
The main convenience of SUSAN is ability to operate with real VINs and security keys and so it keeps ECUs "online" due to that can save a lot of time, money and does not require wide knowledge about security in automotive network.
Modules
The SUSAN simulation solution consists of 4 complementary modules that form the entire functional ecosystem
- Cryptographic module
- SUSAN CAN extender
- SUSAN advanced
- SUSAN connect
Main part of this ecosystem is SUSAN advanced, that represents the computation module on which all simulations occurs. SUSAN connect is ethernet switch that enables an interconnection of devices via standard Ethernet and automotive Ethernet ports. Cryptographic module serves as secure key storage for ECU secrets and has a processor for calculating cryptographic signatures. SUSAN CAN extender must be used for more complex simulations where more than 2 CANs are required.
Available User Interfaces
There are three different User Interfaces (HMI) implemented for operating with SUSAN
- physical (phyHMI)
- web-based (webHMI)
- remote interface (remoteHMI)
The phyHMI enables the system to be configured without additional end devices.
The remoteHMI provides an interface between external automation systems and SUSAN advanced via ethernet. It also allows to implement more complex custom simulations.
The webHMI is an interactive browser interface for the user to control the SUSAN system. It provides even more settings than the phyHMI due to the lack of its physical limitations while in the
same time being much more user friendly for complex configuration tasks like creating preset config files, etc.

Cryptographic module is based on WIBU Systems CodeMeter Stick and provides a secure solution to store secret data of virtual vehicles. It enables the calculation and validation of cryptographic signatures, too. This is necessary for the calculation of message signatures. A single cryptographic module represents a virtual vehicle.
CodeMeter Sticks have been on the market as license dongle for years and are used successfully by numerous companies. The application has proven itself.

In order to use simulations that depend on more than two CAN interfaces, SUSAN advanced has to be expanded by more CAN interfaces provided by PCAN-USB adapter to ensure proper interconnection with all parts in test setup and expected functionality.
Currently SUSAN advanced supports two versions of PCAN-USB adapter
- PCAN-USB FD
- PCAN-USB Pro FD
Both mentioned PCAN-USB adapters are supplied by Digiteq Automotive in a pre-configured state to ensure that they are seamlessly recognised.
